Description
Pig farrowing crates are metal-barred enclosures within a pen where pregnant sows are confined before giving birth. These crates restrict sows from turning around, allowing only limited forward and backward movement. Sows typically remain in farrowing crates for about five weeks per litter. Given that sows farrow approximately 2.3 times annually, they spend nearly 80 days—almost a quarter of their adult breeding lives—confined this way.
Inside the pen, there is a heated area called the “creep,” where piglets can move to stay warm and avoid lying beside the sow. Piglets can still nurse from the sow, but when in the creep, the sow cannot clean or interact with them. Because fully grown sows weigh between 200 to 300 kg, while newborn piglets weigh under 2 kg, there is a risk the sow may accidentally crush her piglets by lying down or stepping on them.
The crate bars are designed so piglets can escape underneath when the sow moves, reducing injury risk. Farrowing crates save space compared to free-movement farrowing pens and allow easier management by farmers without the risk of injury from protective sows. While crates aim to reduce piglet mortality and increase productivity, this outcome is not guaranteed.
